Jean Buttons

Jean buttons — also called tack buttons — are the metal buttons on the waistband of jeans, workwear and denim jackets. Unlike a sewn button, a jean button is fitted with a press: a barbed rivet is pushed through the fabric from the back and clinches permanently into the button’s shank. No thread, no sewing, and a fastening that outlasts the garment it’s fitted to.

We stock jean buttons in sizes from 14mm to 20mm, in all-metal and plastic-base constructions, across a wide range of plated finishes — and we supply the matching rivets to fit them. We are also the first company everyone turns to for their branded buttons.

Denim and Jeans Manufacture

The 17mm tack button is the industry-standard jeans waistband button, and it’s the heart of our range. For denim work you’ll find:

17mm all-metal buttons in brass or mild steel, for standard five-pocket jeans and denim jackets

Patterned and plain caps — stars, leaf designs, ring (open-top) caps and plain domes that take a brand’s look across a range

Matching barbed rivets, fitted one rivet per button with a hand press or bench press

Jackets, Skirts and Small-Run Fashion

Smaller sizes carry the same no-sew fitting into lighter garments:

– 14mm and 15mm buttons for kids’ wear, skirts and shirt-weight denim

– Fashion finishes — rose gold, matt silver, antique copper and gun metal for ranges where the hardware is part of the design

– Open-top (ring) jean buttons that show the fabric through the centre of the cap

Workwear and Uniforms

Workwear needs a button that survives industrial laundering and daily strain. Tack buttons hold where sewn buttons pull loose:

Heavier 17mm and 20mm buttons for overalls, conti suits and work jackets

– Durable plated finishes — nickel and old brass keep their look through repeated washing

– Plastic-base buttons with a metal cap, a lighter and economical option for high-volume uniform work

FQA

What’s the difference between a jean button and a tack button?
Nothing — they’re two names for the same press-fitted metal button. “Tack button” is the trade term; “jean button” is what most customers search for.

How do you attach a jean button?
Push the barbed rivet through the fabric from the back, sit the button cap in the
top die of a press, and press once. The rivet clinches into the button’s shank
permanently. You need one rivet per button.

Can jean buttons be removed?
Not cleanly — they’re designed to be permanent. A fitted button must be cut out,
which is why it outperforms a sewn button on workwear.

What size jean button do I need?
17mm is the standard for jeans waistbands. Use 20mm for heavy workwear, and 14–15mm for kids’ wear, skirts and lighter garments.
